Samsung has announced a new app called Soundcamp, which allows users to DJ right from their smartphone.
The app is compatible with a number of third-party apps and allows amateur and professional DJs to mix and spin from their smartphone display without the need for other equipment.
Soundcamp itself is basically a mobile DAW (digital audio workstation) and MIDI sequencer, which is designed to be a recording and editing system that allows musicians to have access to virtual instruments like synthesizers and drums from their smartphone. Not only that, but the app also has an audio recorder with a number of sound effects on offer.
The app will also allow users to work with third-party apps on offer in the Google Play Store. It also offers editing tools using the app's "mobile workstation soundboard." Soundcamp has what it calls Multitrack View, which allows for the recording of up to eight MIDI or audio tracks at once.
The MIDI editor enables users to edit MIDI as easily as they would on a PC, and the Mixer View looks like a mixing console, from which users can mix their new song. MIDI, or Musical Instrument Digital Interface, basically captures information about what is being played rather than the audio itself. For example, if a keyboard was connected to the phone via MIDI it would record which notes were being played and when, triggering audio sounds based on that. Users could then change the sounds they want triggered from an organ to a synth, for example, using the same information.
The new app is one of very few DAWs available for mobile devices. It is largely expected that more DAWs will become available on mobile devices in the future as phones become more powerful, and it looks like Samsung is positioning itself to be a leader in the mobile DAW market.
Soundcamp is available from the Google Play Store here, although it seems as though the app is only compatible with Samsung devices.
