First-Person Shooter Fan? Hi-Rez Is Making All 'Tribes' Games Free-To-Play

The remaining two months of 2015 are big for gaming. Gamers can anticipate the release of major titles, as well as price drops for gaming hardware. But those aren't the only gifts getting unwrapped as the holidays approach.

Hi-Rez Studios, a Georgia-based game developer, has just listed 21 years' worth of game titles for free as part of its celebration for the two decades of the Tribes Universe. The company is giving away eight titles, which is comprised of five Tribes games and two Earthsiege games.

"Welcome! Join Hi-Rez Studios in celebrating over twenty years of the TRIBES Universe! Below you will find links to download the legacy games in the series," Hi-Rez' writes on the frontpage of the Tribes Universe portal. "We love these games and hope to let you share the experience of the World's Fastest Shooter."

As mentioned, two Earthsiege titles, which are both mecha-style simulation PC games, were listed as free. This includes 1994's Earthsiege and its predecessor, Earthsiege 2 from 1998.

Moreover, six Tribes titles, a collection of fast shooter games, can also be downloaded at no charge. The list also includes Starsiege: Tribes, which was released in 1998, Tribes 2 from 2001, Tribes: Aerial Assault of 2002, Tribes: Vengeance from 2004, and Tribes: Ascend, the latest Tribes title release.

All of this titles, except for Tribes: Ascend, were developed by Dynamix, a subsidiary of Sierra Entertainment, an American game publisher that is owned by Activision. Hi-Rez Studios purchased the IPs (intellectual property) for the Tribe universe back in 2010. It wasn't until 2012 when Tribes: Ascend was released, that Hi-Rez Studios developed its own Tribes title.

The games need to be downloaded individually. Clicking on the titles will bring out their descriptions. It's hard to miss the shiny red download button on the upper part of the collapsible section.
