'Pacific Rim 2's' Script And Budget Have Been Submitted, Says Guillermo Del Toro

It has been a bumpy ride for Pacific Rim fans. The first film made a sizable sum in the U.S. when it released in 2013, but its high production costs meant the film only became profitable (and even then, barely so) thanks to huge success overseas.

Word came shortly after that a sequel would be made, only for it to be announced in recent months that the sequel is now in limbo.

That brings us to today. Director Guillermo del Toro has been giving fans frequent updates about the status of the film, and yesterday, he dropped the biggest news yet: both the film's script and proposed budget have been submitted to Warner Bros.

It's unclear when the director may hear back, but perhaps there is good reason to believe a sequel may, once again, become a reality. Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. (who were also responsible for Pacific Rim) recently announced a cinematic universe for their giant monsters that will include Godzilla and King Kong. While Pacific Rim likely won't cross over with those films, it shows at least that Legendary and Warner Bros. are confident that giant monster movies can find an audience both stateside and abroad.

As for what Pacific Rim 2 will be about, few details are known at this point. John Spaihts penned the script, and del Toro has teased new Jaegars from various countries will appear. He even proposed on Twitter that he would love for Maisie Williams of Game of Thrones fame to appear in the movie. Now, all we can do is wait for word from the director himself. In the meantime, the Pacific Rim comic series and animated series still appear to be on track.
