Pentatonix sings their way sans music to the top of the Billboard 200 chart. The group says they are honored to be competing with established music icons
Pentatonix is having a blast this year as the group continues to soar in the music charts. Not only did they win their first Grammy Award for Best Arrangement, Instrumental and A Cappella back in February, they have just taken the number one spot in the Billboard 200 this week for their first album with a focus on their original tracks, beating Demi Lovato who currently holds the number two spot.
Their self-titled album which was released on Oct. 16 reached sales of up to 98,447 units, including streams and single song sales, and took the number one spot from Selena Gomez's album "Revival," which held the number one spot the week prior. You can watch their official music video of "Can't Sleep Love," one of their original songs in the album, shown.
"Honestly, it's a really big honor to be competing against her and people on her level," Avi Kaplan said in an interview when asked about how it felt to be competing with Demi Lovato for the No. 1 spot.
The A Capella group of five was first seen when they competed and won on the National Broadcasting Company's (NBC) television show, "The Sing-Off," in 2011. Pentatonix is composed of Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstie Maldonado, Avi Kaplan and Kevin "K.O." Olusola, who all have a very strong foundation in music at an early age: Scott is a pianist and songwriter who has been performing since he was eight years old; Mitch, the youngest, has won several vocal competitions and is improving his DJ-ing and production skills even as he sings with Pentatonix; Kristin has experience performing as part of a show-choir and stage production as well as a member of the Texas All State choir; Avi's passion is in classical music but he also composes and arranges music for a cappela and chorale; and K.O. plays piano, cello and saxophone, is awesome at celloboxing, as well as has a solo album which debuted at No. 1 at the Billboard Traditional Classical and Classical Crossover charts.
Here is a bonus of Pentatonix paying homage to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
