California Age Verification Bill Clears Assembly: Linux Spared, Websites Added to Age-Gating Regime

California age verification law AB 1856 passed the Assembly 68-1 on May 28, exempting Linux and open-source operating systems from mandatory age-bracket compliance. But the same bill extends age-gating to browsers and websites — a net expansion the Electronic Frontier Foundation warns will make it nearly impossible for California users to avoid age-data collection online.
