The world has seen some pretty dark politics, but none darker and stranger than the literal "Dark Side" presently promoted by Ukraine's Internet Party.
No, this party has nothing to do with netizens sitting in front of their computers, having pizza whilst writing celebration-themed posts.
The Internet Party of Ukraine is a legitimate political party in Ukraine, established in 2007 and registered in April 2010.
The Internet Party has received their fair share of publicity, including a politician officially changing his name to "Darth Alekseyevich Vader" and not being able to vote for refusing to remove his mask. His running mates are Palpatine, Padme Amidala, Yoda and Chewbacca.
This time, the Ukranian Internet Party's very own Chewbacca is in the limelight for landing himself in court.
A man dressed as Chewbacca was arrested on Ukraine's local election day, Oct. 25, for illegally campaigning for his mate, Darth Vader.
A Ukranian publication reported that Stepan Chewbacca was arrested for declining to present his passport and for displaying "willful disobedience to a police officer."
After confiscating his laser gun and lightsaber (bet the police never thought they'd being doing that when they signed up for the job), the police took the man-Wookiee to the police station.
The above tweet translates as "Odessa. Nothing unusual to see here. Chewbacca's just being detained for unlawful behavior."
He consequently appeared in court, captured in one of the most curious arrest photos we may ever see in this lifetime.
Darth Vader, an aspiring candidate for the Internet Party of Ukraine, complained that his name did not appear on the ballot. For of this incident, he accused the Ukranian government of "fraud," reason why his pal, Chewbacca decided to campaign for him.
A reaction to the notoriously corrupt Ukranian government, The Internet Party of Ukraine operates by the slogan "electronic government against bureaucracy," and a vision to "create an electronic government in Ukraine." The party wants to reach a new level of economic development and technology in the country via computerization, elimination of bureaucracy, transition to digital media, free computer courses for the public, reduction of taxes, abolition of VAT, ban on GM product sales, offshore zone establishment and withdrawal from the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering.
