'Doom' Alpha Gameplay Highlights Fast-Paced Action And Gory Finishers

Doom made a big splash at this year's E3, as Id Software lifted the veil on the long-awaited next installment in the classic shooter franchise. What it showed was a return to the franchise's fast-paced roots, emphasizing the run and gun action of the originals as opposed to the more horror focus adopted by Doom 3.

A closed multiplayer alpha for the game starts tomorrow, open only to a select few gamers who purchased a copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order. However, if you didn't get in the alpha, don't fret. Bethesda has released a new trailer highlighting the multiplayer carnage that is to come in the alpha, and it sure does look good.

The alpha will consist of one map and one mode, with two teams of six battling it out in a classic game of team deathmatch. This is an arena shooter the likes of which we haven't seen recently. Movement is fast, and so is the gunplay. Coming out on top revolves around securing the various weapons and power-ups on the map in order to give your team an advantage.

We get a good look at two of the map's most defining features as well. The first is the powerful Gauss Cannon, a one-shot kill weapon that can even detect enemies through walls. The person playing in the trailer snags more than a few kills with this weapon, each marked by a satisfying explosion of blood and gore.

The Gauss Cannon will especially come in handy when battling against the Revenant Demon. A Demon Rune on the map allows one player to transform into the jet-pack-wearing, rocket-launching equipped monster, and it's a sight to behold. The demon flies around the map reigning death from above with its rockets, making the rune a highly contested point on the map. We also get a glimpse at some of the game's brutal melee finishing moves, as the Revenant Demon meets the bottom of a space marine's boot.

From this brief glimpse, Doom looks to be accomplishing its goals. Players won't be able to livestream or share their experiences in the closed alpha, but it certainly looks to be running smoothly from the trailer. Here's to hoping more players can get their hands on Id's latest soon.

Doom is scheduled for release in spring of 2016.
