While we can thank the Internet for the hilarious Drake memes about his new video for "Hotline Bling," which he released on Apple Music on Monday, another fellow Canadian artist is stealing the spotlight for his new video.
Canadian recording artist The Weeknd released a new fully-immersive virtual reality music video for the remix to his hit single "The Hills."
Using GoPro Spherical 360 footage, the video makes the viewer feel as if they are in the dark and seedy world of Abel Tesfaye, better known by his stage name of The Weeknd.
Featured on his latest album, "Beauty Behind The Madness," the single "The Hills" has already hit triple-platinum. The Weeknd then dropped two remixes for the track, one including Nicki Minaj and the other with Eminem.
The VR experience features a clip from the Eminem remix and allows fans to see what the artist sees in the video.
The clip starts with The Weeknd walking out of the backdoor of what we assume to be a venue where he just performed, as Eminem's verse is playing. Once The Weeknd starts walking through the smoke, the viewer can then click on the screen to get a 360-degree view of the seedy city.
The "Earned It" singer then starts to move toward his limo parked out back, so you can position the camera to feel as if you were in his shoes or turn it around to watch him. You really should take a good look around, because there are lots of trippy things going on. The clouds follow you so you feel like you are in the artist's same mindset as his lyrics suggest, while explosions go off all around, comets shoot across the aurora-colored sky and birds fly out from the flames.
It's best to check out the VR experience on the YouTube app using a VR headset like Google Cardboard, but you will still be able to move around in the world of The Weeknd without it.
