Sony's PlayStation 4 sits on top of the console market once again. For five straight months now, it has continued to dominate the Xbox One in physical sales.
Last month, it was reported that for August 2015, the PS4 continued its onslaught within the console market, which began in May when the Xbox unseated it back in April — the only time the Xbox actually sat atop the console market's physical sales for 2015.
A month later, it's still the same story with the PS4 outselling the Xbox One. The news comes from the NPD Group, an established market research company.
"As we kick off the holiday season, we would like to take a moment to thank fans for making PlayStation 4 the best-selling console and #1 in software sales in September," Sony thanked its player base.
However, NPD also notes that while the PS4 continues to edge out its main competition, console hardware physical sales have dropped compared to last year's figures.
"September 2015 hardware sales dropped by 23 percent due to a difficult comparison to the strong sales in September 2014, which were supported by the launch of Activision's Destiny," said, Liam Callahan, an NPD group analyst.
"This is mainly due to the decline of 7th generation consoles and portables, which are not being offset by 8th generation consoles despite a 66 percent increase in sales," he wrote in a blog post.
Nonetheless, both console accessories and software have charted an increase in physical sales this year.
"Accessories have so far had a stellar year through August data, currently up 13 percent," Callahan explained. "New physical software is up a modest 1 percent."
For game titles, NPD released the top 10 list for September 2015, which reveals that NBA 2K16 has taken the crown from last month's best-seller, Madden NFL 16 that now sits in second place. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain made it to number three while FIFA 16 and Destiny: The Taken King are at number spots 4 and 5, respectively. Below is the full list of games that are within the top 10.
