Reports claim Microsoft is working on a Smartwatch: Here is everything we think we know

The age of the smartwatch is upon us. So far we've seen a lot from Google with its Android Wear push and a plethora of rumors of what Apple is working on. However, not much is known about Microsoft's possible smartwatch, so we're going to allocate everything known about the company's plan in one little spot.

It is clear from recent actions that Microsoft is not interested in being left behind in another potentially popular and profitable market. The smartwatch market is getting increased attention, and it appears as if Microsoft is secretly working on something that is being designed by the Surface team.

What we think we know

Some rumors claim the device is a smartwatch, while others claim it's a smartband similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fit. If the Microsoft device is indeed a smartwatch, we should expect features that are similar to what Google demoed on Android Wear. However, if the device is a smartband, chances are Microsoft would focus on fitness.

Health and Fitness:

We're hearing that whatever Microsoft is working on, will be fitness focused. Furthermore, it should come packed with up to 11 sensors, designed to track heart rate and sleep patterns, among other things. These fitness features are also expected to work hand in hand with the Bing Health and Fitness app.

Design:

The rumored design is a bit off. Apparently, the watch face will be placed at the inside of the user's wrist. If that is the case, then it could be to allow the heart rate monitor sensors to connect better with the pulse inside the inner wrist. This could be the reason why every smartwatch with a heart rate monitor has failed in that department, since the sensors are placed on top of the wrist.

Features and Connectivity:

Obviously, heart rate monitor features are rumored to be the most important aspect of Microsoft smartwatch. However, other rumors claim the device should come with Bluetooth and the ability to connect wirelessly to smartphones based on Android, iOS and Windows Phone 8. Users should be able to view text messages sent to their smartphone on the smartwatch, along with using the watch to answer incoming calls.

Now, if rumors of the device being a smartband are true, then interested persons should expect the ability to check the weather or the latest scores. The device would be tied down to a smartphone and lacking the GSM radio.

Pricing and availability:

October of this year is what we are hearing, but it may all depend on the development progress so far. When it comes down to pricing, new rumors claim it should cost $199.99 at retail, which is a decent price, but probably not decent enough if it isn't a full-fledged smartwatch.
