AT&T And Uber To Test Streaming Of College Football Games In Connected Cars

Uber rides are about to get better during weekends in select cities.

According to a Reuters report, AT&T and Uber have joined forces to make streaming college football games available to customers via tablets in the backseat of their rides for a limited time. The way the experiment will work is 10 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV Uber rides, with AT&T wireless connectivity, will hit the streets during four Saturdays in Detroit, Houston, Nashville and Atlanta in October and November, AT&T spokesperson Brett Levecchio told Reuters.

Each vehicle will have four tablets installed in the back of the headrests in addition to wireless headsets and cell-phone chargers to enhance the experience of enjoying a college football game in an Uber ride.

AT&T has also signed deals with General Motors, Audi and Ford to bring wireless connectivity to their respective vehicles as well. Since acquiring DirecTV for $48.5 billion in July, AT&T has been chomping at the bit to test the eagerness for video content in connected cars and this partnership gives the wireless tech giant the opportunity it has been yearning for.

Uber customers will be able to experience these specially-outfitted cars by clicking a custom tab in the ride-hailing app, according to Levecchio. He also told Reuters that in promotion of the AT&T and Uber partnership via this testing, Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerome Bettis and former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Dat Nyugen will even surprise Uber customers by making unannounced appearances in cars and watching college football games with them.
