The creator of the influential role-playing game series Final Fantasy has returned with a new game, and it is an RPG for mobile devices called Terra Battle.
Hironobu Sakaguchi unveiled the game at the Japan Expo in Paris, France this week. He discussed it in more detail during an interview with Japanese gaming magazine "Famitsu." The game will be a free-to-play role-playing game for mobile platforms made by his studio, Mistwalker.
According to sites reporting on the Japanese article, Sakaguchi states he would like to see a console version of Terra Battle in the future. He also mentions that his long-time collaborator from past Final Fantasy games, Nobuo Uematsu, would be composing music for Terra Battle.
Sakaguchi is the creator of the Final Fantasy series. The venerable role-playing game series from Japan debuted in 1987 for the Nintendo's Famicom, known as the Nintendo Entertainment System in America. He worked on the popular series, as game director or executive producer, as it went from sequel to sequel, from one generation of platform to the next. His last Final Fantasy title was 2006's Final Fantasy XII for PlayStation 2. He would also write and direct the film "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" in 2001.
In 2004, Sakaguchi left Square to form his own company, Mistwalker. There, he work on role-playing games Blue Dragon (2006) and Lost Odyssey (2007) for Xbox 360 and The Last Story (2011) for Nintendo Wii.
The last video game he made as a director is Party Wave from 2012. Wave is a casual mobile title for iOS and Android that involves surfing, a hobby of Sakaguchi.
Sakaguchi, through the Final Fantasy series, was known for bringing complex stories to console role-playing games. With Final Fantasy VII for PlayStation 1, he ushered in an era of cinematic storytelling for Square though the game's use of computer-generated imagery. He would continue to push the envelope in combining game's interactivity with cgi-based cinematics through the rest of the series, and then with the titles he has made at Mistwalker.
Terra Battle will launch for Android and iOS platforms in September.
