"The Girl Who Died" is the first of two Doctor Who episodes this season guest starring Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams. They don't sound anything like a traditional two-parter, aside from their titles; the second episode is called "The Woman Who Lived."
In typical Doctor Who fashion, Williams' role is shrouded in secrecy. What we know at the moment is that in "The Girl Who Died," she's a young Viking girl named Ashildre whose village is attacked by fierce alien warriors. These warriors, known as the Mire, want to absorb from the Vikings the essence that makes them such formidable fighters (or something). The Doctor and Clara wind up trying to help the Vikings protect their village, but the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) is oddly preoccupied with Ashildre.
Is she the girl the episode's title refers to, who dies? Hmm.
Part 2, "The Woman Who Lived," is set some years later in England, where the streets of London are being stalked by a highwayman known as "The Knightmare." Somehow, Williams' young girl winds up in this setting as well. A clip that was part of an early trailer for this season suggested that the Doctor may already know her somehow, from before any of these events occur.
BBC America has released a new preview clip for "The Girl Who Died," and it has Ashildre and Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald trying to help a group of Vikings escape from a Death Star trash smasher kind of thing. Check it out.
"The Girl Who Died" premieres Saturday night, October 17 on BBC America.
