Director Alex Kurtzman, who is set to direct the reboot of "The Mummy" targeted for release in 2017, revealed that there is a possibility for the upcoming film to feature a female mummy instead of the well-known male creatures from the original and its sequels. It is not yet set in stone, though, because Kurtzman says the casting will still determine if a female mummy is happening, but that two different back stories have been prepared for both male and female monsters and the final script that will be used will be determined by whoever gets the part.
Fans of the 1999 "The Mummy" reboot and its sequels starring Brendan Fraser know the story: a knowledgeable monster is inadvertently brought back to life after reading from "The Egyptian Book of the Dead" and the mummified creature stalks a beautiful woman whom he believes is the reincarnation of his beloved when he was alive. The sequel to Fraser's "The Mummy" also introduced the Scorpion King in "The Mummy Returns" as Imhotep is resurrected, this time, by the true reincarnation of Anck Su Namun and attempts to gain the power of the Scorpion King to lead his army and rule the world. This spawned Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's own "The Scorpion King" movie in 2002.
"The Mummy" has already crossed cultural borders in 2008's Rob Cohen directed sequel "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" where Jet Li played the part of the monster and it seems the new production is eager to reinterpret the original storyline by changing the sex of the monster. We would all just have to wait and see if Kurtzman gets his opportunity when they announce the final cast.
The reboot is only just one of the monster projects that Universal Studios plans to release. The studio reportedly plans to resurrect other classic monsters such as Dracula and Frankenstein, among others.
