Marvel's 'All-New Wolverine' #1 Gives The Claws To A Female Lead

There's a new Wolverine in town, and it's not who you expect. Introducing Laura Kinney: the world's first female Wolverine.

In Marvel's ongoing series, All-New Wolverine, Laura takes on the role of Wolverine after the death of Logan that happened last year. However, before he died, he took on Laura, better known as X-23, and took her under his wing. Logan became Laura's mentor and now that he's gone, she's taking on the Wolverine mantle.

"Logan may have fallen, but Laura will honor his memory by taking up the mantle and following in his footsteps as a hero," writes Marvel in a press release. "And she'll stop at nothing to protect those around her from the forces of evil. "

Marvel also released artwork from All-New Wolverine #1, which includes a cover by Bengal and variant covers by David Lopez, David Marquez and Art Adams. There will also be a hip-hop variant cover by Keron Grant, a design variant by David Lopez and an action figure variant by John Tyler Christopher.

All-New Wolverine is part of Marvel's "All-New All-Different" campaign, which so far has added diversity into the company's line-up, including new titles devoted to Spider-Gwen and the all female Avengers team A-Force. The company also just recently announced plans to bring back its Power Man and Iron Fist series.

"Really, and we mean this genuinely, it's only the beginning," said Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort at San Diego Comic Con this year, as reported by Polygon. "We talk about the need for greater diversity in our cast and in our writers all the time. We don't want to just throw stuff out there, so it takes a certain amount of time to make things happen. But this is only the beginning."

Last year, the company surprised many of its readers by creating a new version of Thor that was female. Marvel also handed over the title of Ms. Marvel to a 14-year-old Muslim girl. Both moves were controversial, but ultimately paid off for the company.

"I thought they were going to need an intern to open all the hate mail," said Marvel director of content and character development Sana Amanat to Time. "Now I have people you would least expect - like this giant, blond, bearded guy I met in Denver-telling me how they connect to Ms. Marvel because they were made fun of in school for being different."

Written by Tom Taylor with artwork by artist David Lopez, All-New Wolverine #1 hits comic book stores in November.
