Kabam and Warner Bros. to make new 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Mad Max' games

Kabam and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE) have announced they are extending their partnership further with the creation and publishing of new mobile games based on "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy of films and a game based on the "Mad Max" character, just in time for the new film, "Mad Max: Fury Road."

The two companies have already found success together with the free-to-play strategy game The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle Earth for mobile platforms. The Hobbit game has made more than $100 million in revenue

"WBIE has been an amazing partner and we look forward to building on our previous success with these strong franchises," said Kabam Chief Operating Officer, Kent Wakeford in a statment. "Marquee brands like 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'Mad Max' are perfect for the deeply immersive and fun mobile games Kabam creates."

Kabam has also made other games based on films beside The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle Earth, including The Godfather: Five Families, Fast and the Furious 6: The Game and a game based on "The Hunger Games" movie, which will be released sometime in the future. Kabam has stated it earned more than $360 million in revenue in 2013, and the company predicts $550 million in revenue in 2014.

WBIE is also working on a Mad Max console game to be released in 2015 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.

"Kabam's demonstrated expertise is very impressive, and extending our partnership with their team will help both companies achieve continued success," said WBIE Executive Vice President, Publishing Operations, David Haddad in a statement. "Building two new mobile games based on well-known 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'Mad Max' brands is a strategic part of our growth as the appetite for digital content continues to grow."

The recent "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" films are adaptations of the famous fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. The movies have grossed $4.9 billion at the worldwide box office, according to Box Office Mojo. All of the films were directed by Peter Jackson and produced by Warner Bros. subsidiary New Line Cinema.

The "Mad Max" films from the 1980's starred Mel Gibson in a post-apocalyptic world, and were directed by George Miller. They made $171 million revenue, adjusted for inflation by Mojo. "Mad Max: Fury Road" will be released May 2015. It is directed by George Miller, produced by Warner Bros. and stars Tom Hardy.
