Mad Max: Fury Road wasn't your average action movie in a number of ways. Essentially one long, gorgeous chase sequence with little actual dialogue, it was also peculair due to the fact that the film's title character felt like a sidekick in his own movie.
It was Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa who stole the show, but it sounds like director George Miller doesn't have any grand plans for the character. When asked by Digital Spy if Furiosa may appear in one of the Mad Max sequels Miller is said to be working on, the director said he wasn't sure.
"I'm not sure, is the answer," Miller says to the AV Club. "She's not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there's an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can't really say more than that because it's still in progress."
Another recent interview with Miller revealed that there are currently a number of Mad Max sequel scripts being worked on, with it being unclear which will be adapted into a film next.
"We ended up with two scripts, without really trying," Miller says. "We're talking to the studio [Warner Bros] about it as we speak, but which one of the two stories will happen next, I'm not so sure."
It's a little disappointing that Furiosa will likely not have much more than a cameo appearance in future films, if she appears at all, but perhaps it isn't surprising. Few of the other Mad Max films have recurring characters aside from Max himself, as the tales always focus on Max stumbling into a new adventure, helping (somewhat reluctantly) those in need and then going out on his own once again.
Just don't expect to see any more Mad Max any time soon. Miller says the eight month filming process for Fury Road was a lot of work, and that he wants to first work on a smaller, special effects free film before diving back into the world of the Wasteland.
