Next-gen games are huge, that's no surprise, but it's not just about length or hype factor anymore. The amount of work required just to render a character's face is ridiculous, and said work requires more storage space than ever before. Of course, the bigger the game, the more storage it requires: just look at Sony's Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.
Or, better yet, take a look at 343 Industries' Halo 5: Guardians. The studio has said on a number of different occasions that Halo 5 is bigger than any other game in the series—which, up until this point, has been nothing but good news. With review copies making their way to media outlets, however, fans are starting to understand what the cost of that really is—specifically, the game's storage requirements on the Xbox One.
Hopefully, you've already got some free space on your console, but Halo 5: Guardians is no slouch: 343 Industries' latest will take up a whopping 60 GB once fully installed. Granted, the developers are promising both a huge campaign and multiplayer experience, along with a slew of extras, but either way, 60 GB is huge.
The 60 GB number comes from early physical copies of the game shipped out by Microsoft. If you take a look at the back of the case (via IGN), you can see that the game requires the "game disc and up to 60 GB of storage." It's impossible to confirm the actual file size until someone throws some screenshots online or Microsoft releases an official figure, but even if the number isn't exactly 60 GB, expect the game to come close to that threshold.
What's amazing is that, with time, the game will only get bigger and bigger: Microsoft has confirmed that Halo 5's DLC maps will all be free, and that's great, but they'll take up space, too—basically, that 60 GB requirement is just the start.
Gigantic file size or not, the game is almost here: Halo 5: Guardians is set to hit store shelves on Oct. 27.
