The Walking Dead returns for its sixth season on Sunday, and show creator Robert Kirkman revealed that it might just be the best season to date.
Speaking on Thursday at New York Comic Con, Kirkman discussed what fans can expect this season as its characters continue to evolve and fight for their lives against the walkers.
"This is going to be the most intense season of The Walking Dead yet," Kirkman said. "The first few episodes hit the ground running, and there'll be pretty big cliffhangers at the end of every episode."
Kirkman said character Morgan (Lennie James) will play a huge role this season, which will please fans of the comic book series. He also spoke of the changes Maggie's (Lauren Cohan) character will go through in season 6.
"[Maggie has] become very assertive ... bridging the gap between the Alexandrians and Rick's group. We're going to see her kicking butt. There's a lot of cool stuff with Maggie coming."
Speaking of the comics, Kirkman shared his opinion that Carol is a better character in the series than in the comics because she is stronger due the horrible things she has endured compared with her print counterpart.
Fans can also expect some cool changes to the walkers this season, with Kirkman revealing that, with the use of more CGI, viewers will be able to see more decaying flesh on the zombies.
Even though we couldn't be more excited for the hit AMC series to return, Kirkman shared his plans on when the show will finally end. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the showrunner joked that he will continue working on the series until he dies or at least until he's 82 — although that would mean it would have no resolution.
There was also talk about what fans can expect from the second season of Fear the Walking Dead, with Kirkman joking that, since season 1 ended with the characters taking to the water, water zombies could very much be a possibility.
"There's definitely some water action coming up. There will be seafaring adventures. There will be reasons to get off the boat and get on to a different boat," he said. "It's going to be a journey, where people are finding a place where they're not in danger. And the open ocean may not be that place."
The Walking Dead season 6 premieres Sunday, Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. EDT on AMC.
