Bowers & Wilkins' New Zeppelin Wireless Speaker Looks Out Of This World

It looks more like a flying saucer than a speaker.

However, while Bowers & Wilkins' new Zeppelin Wireless speaker might not yet be that far into the future, it has cut the cord on any hard-wired or direct connection and removed its dock port, now offering a high-end wireless sound with a futuristic look to match.

The Apple-compatible, disc-shaped Zeppelin speaker supports streaming audio platforms such as AirPlay and Spotify Connect, while also working with Bluetooth aptX. The five-piece speaker system, which uses two 25-watt tweeters, two 25-watt midrange drivers and a 6.5-inch 50-watt subwoofer, can be controlled via an app for iOS, Android, Mac and PC.

Bowers & Wilkins didn't sacrifice the dock that the Zeppelin speaker once touted only for wireless compatibility, though. The redesigned speaker was also revamped to limit vibration, offering a cleaner and crisper sound. Besides, who needs a docking port on their speaker system anymore? The actual speaker only has three buttons on it — play, pause and volume. What about the volume? The system could bump ... loudly.

That's a crucial aspect, considering the Zeppelin Wireless speaker is available on Bowers & Wilkins' website Thursday for a cool $699. It's scheduled to hit stores exactly one week from now, on Oct. 15. While there are a litany of speaker choices that are cheaper and still offer a respectable sound good enough to get the job done, audiophiles know what to expect from Bowers & Wilkins, as the company's reputation for pristine sound speaks for itself.

A video on the company's website shows the craftsmanship and guts of its newest speaker.
