Google has announced that by using Google Cardboard, users will soon be able to enter virtual reality with Street View.
Street View was recently split off from Maps into its own app, and it's certainly possible that this was why. Users will basically be able to tap on the Cardboard icon, which will split the display into two and it will be adapted to suit the user's eyes being close to the display.
While this isn't the first time that we've been able to access Street View using virtual reality, it is the first time that we've been able to use VR through the Street View app. The move will make Street View VR much more accessible.
Opening Street View to virtual reality is really a great idea, and will essentially mean that users can "visit" anywhere they want that has been captured through Street View. Users could find themselves standing in front of the Eiffel Tower or peering down into the Grand Canyon. Of course, this is likely to get better and better over time as Google both improves Street View image quality and offers more places to visit using Street View.
The new feature will also help users find their way easier, and make it possible to conduct a "test run" of going from one place to another before they even have to do it.
