Tearaway Unfolded was released for the PlayStation 4 last month and the papercraft adventure has been generally well-received by both critics and players. Taking a look back, Media Molecule shared some things about the game, offering more insight into its development process.
In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Jenny Lawrence, junior community manager for game developer Media Molecule said that there are always a number of fascinating facts worth noting during the making of any game, adding that they've decided to dust off their memories and go back to the time Tearaway Unfolded was being developed for the PS4, and Tearaway for the PS Vita, to share some of their own secret squirrels with players.
This resulted in a rundown of 17 weird facts about Tearaway, which includes:
.That 280,918 sheets of paper and 647,708 folds went into making Tearaway;
.That Tearaway was originally called Sandpit and a lot of their code still uses this reference instead of the game's final name;
.That each object in Tearaway could theoretically be produced from real paper, thanks to their bespoke editor;
.That the game features procedural "thick edges" in the PS4 version that are automatically added to paper edges that are not ripped, making the paper look even more realistic;
.That all edging in Tearaway Unfolded utilized actual 3D edging and not textures;
.That real global locations were used when Tearaway was in its early stages as a free-roaming gaming, making it possible to walk from Scotland to the very south of England within 46 minutes and 12 seconds;
.That Monkeys are Squirrels, Grunts (sometimes Cyclops) were Scraps and Elephants were Elks in the development environment;
.That fluff is also known as confetti;
.That Dependinator and the Fluffinator are the result of the game editor still using LBP "-inator" suffixes;
.That iota was originally known as OOLA and looked different from his current appearance;
.That the same level editor was used to build the Game Menu as what the game is on;
.That Paper Plane was made for Tearaway originally but it didn't feel right for the developers that's why they are doubly excited that it is appearing in Tearaway Unfolded;
.That the game is in 21 languages, with 29,097 words, translating to 611, 037 words total;
.That the Tripod is the best tool for taking selfies in insane situations, like while on the Paper Plane or riding the Pig;
.That scraps fart;
.That a physical prototype made of paper exists to represent the in-game menu; and
.That no baby Wendigos were harmed during the making of Tearaway.
