The Lumo Run Shorts is a pair of sensor-filled shorts designed specifically with runners in mind.
The "smart garments" come as shorts for men and capris for women and are now available for pre-order. Each pair is equipped with a device that is nestled inside the pocket. When paired with an app, the runner will be able to assess his performance with every step that he has made.
"Here at Lumo Bodytech HQ, we've been hard at work for the past couple of months for a very exciting new project. Inspired by our passion for integrating technology to solve important biomechanics and our enthusiasm for running, we are so thrilled to introduce Lumo Run: a pair of revolutionary smart running shorts (capris for women) with sensor technology embedded in the waistband to coach you to run faster, and farther," said the company on their official blog post.
The shorts have built-in gyroscope and accelerometer sensors which are found in the rear part of the waistband. These sensors are designed to track a number of runner-specific data such as stride, pelvic rotation, braking, bounce, cadence and ground contact with every step.
While running, the data gathered by the sensors will then be used to provide the runner with live audio coaching that comes from the compatible iOS app. This way, he can get advice on how he can adjust his form in order to have better performance and prevent injury. The same coaching can be achieved even when the phone is left in the house since the sensor can also sync data which the runner can retrieve after the day's workout.
"Equipped with 9-axis sensor technology and advanced algorithms, the Lumo Run brings the power of a running lab and the personal attention of a coach - all within the lining of your shorts. We've teamed up with PhD Biomechanist, Rebecca Schultz, and running experts at Loughborough University in the UK to determine key characteristics for ideal running form, as well as coaching tips to help runners improve their form for enhanced efficiency and performance. The Lumo Run smart shorts will be the first ever on the market to be able to capture research-grade running biometrics without the costly and heavy equipment of a full running lab," explains the company on its blog post.
Additionally, Lumo Run is also designed to track time, distance, pace and map routes using one's mobile device. It gives the runner post-run summaries on each of the metrics and recommendations on the things he needs to work on for his next running workout.
The Lumo Run Shorts are scheduled to ship in March 2016 and will retail at $140 for men and $169 for women. The sensors are initially compatible for use with iOS devices although an Android version is also in the works. Oh, and yes, both the shorts with its sensors are machine washable and are designed to last for years. According to Lumo, they are also working to come up with a powerful battery that will be enough to last for one month.
