Apple has begun selling authorized lugs for its Apple Watch via Avnet, a third-party distributor. The lugs can be deployed by third-party Apple Watch band makers to create the accessory for the smartwatch.
The lugs being sold by Avnet are composed of stainless steel and have the words "Made for Apple Watch" etched across in laser to validate its authenticity.
The lugs can only be used in third-party watch bands that conform to Apple's Band Design Guidelines standard for its smartwatch. The official guidelines from Apple do not just specify the dimensions of the watch band, but also standards of the material being used, the functionality and durability.
"Proper assembly of the lug is critical to ensure your band securely attaches to the Apple Watch. Improper assembly could result in damage to the Apple Watch," notes Apple in its lug assembly guidelines.
Accessory manufacturers will also likely be required to buy the Pentalobe 1.1 screwdriver being sold by Avnet. These are needed for the assembly of the lug and cost $12.65 for a unit.
Third-party watch band makers can purchase both the 42mm and 38mm variants in bulk in lots that can vary from 25 to 200. The price of the lugs is $278.75 for 25 sets ($11.15 per set) of the 38mm versions and $1836 for 200 sets ($9.18 per set).
The price of the lugs for the 42mm versions is $282.25 for 25 sets ($11.33 per set) and $1866 for 200 sets.
The stainless steel lugs are compliant with the Apple Watch Edition, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch versions. Per Avnet, a single watch band requires one set i.e. two Apple Watch lugs
While Avnet lists the stainless steel lugs for purchase on its website, currently the Space Black, Space Gray, Rose Gold and Yellow Gold lugs are not available for sale.
Currently, Avnet offers delivery of the products in two weeks. To place your order for the watch band lugs head to Avnet's website.
