Drew Goddard is making rounds for The Martian but he's also being interviewed about his potential and past works, with one conversation exploring a sequel for The Cabin in the Woods, which Goddard directed and wrote with Joss Whedon.
Talking to Den of Geek, Goddard has confirmed that there is interest from MGM for a possible sequel and the studio has approached him and Whedon about it. However, they didn't plan the movie to have a sequel so it's a bit funny to him exploring a continuation. The Cabin in the Woods, after all, ended quite definitively, leaving very little room, if any at all, to work on for a sequel.
However, Goddard is quick to say that despite not having a lot of open ends to focus on, the movie does follow some pretty crazy rules so it's entirely possible to build on something completely absurd and yet it will seem highly plausible given that it's being carried out in an environment like the cabin.
"I'm sure we could figure it out if we got inspired to," he said, adding that he and Whedon feel the same way about not wanting to tarnish what they had done with the first one and that a sequel is likely to push through if the two came up with something that they can both laugh hard enough about.
Goddard makes it clear that there are no concrete ideas for a sequel but who knows? He said that he and Whedon work in such a way that they can just go wake up the next day and fixate on doing something and that something could end up being the sequel for The Cabin in the Woods.
Released in 2012, The Cabin in the Woods starred Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Jesse Williams, Fran Kranz and Kristen Connolly. It was shelved for a time, no thanks to some financial issues MGM was having at the time, but eventually hit the big screen, receiving acclaim and $66 million in the box office. The Cabin in the Woods was Goddard's directorial debut.
