'Doctor Who' Gets Teenage Makeover In Spin-off

A new Doctor Who spin-off is coming and it's getting the teenage treatment.

Set in contemporary London, Class will be centering on the incredible dangers that breaking through the walls of space and time bring, leaving the city unprotected as darkness comes. BBC Three promises that the spin-off will be revealing as side of Coal Hill School and Doctor Who that fans have never seen before.

The spin-off will have Patrick Ness, young adult author, as executive producer, alongside Brian Minchin and Steven Moffat. BBC Cymru Wales will be producing Class for BBC Three in partnership with BBC Worldwide and filming will begin next spring in Wales for the show's 2016 release.

"No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness," said Moffat, likening the spin-off to growing up in modern-day Britain with the addition of monsters.

This will be Ness' first television series and he is thrilled and astounded to be a part of the vast Doctor Who universe. He said there's so much room for all sorts of amazing stories and working with Minchin and Moffat has been an absolute joy. Ness added that he can't wait for the heroes of Class to be introduced and for the people to meet the various aliens and villains in the spin-off and be reminded of the horrors of their teenage years.

BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh said they are excited to be working with Ness and he is delighted to see author's incredible storytelling skill at play. He added that BBC Three will always find a way to innovate, offering opportunities whenever and wherever possible to foster new talent.

Class the fourth spin-off for Doctor Who. It follows Torchwood, which ran for four seasons; K-9, a short-lived animated series; and The Sarah Jane Adventures, which spanned five seasons. Doctor Who itself recently saw the start of its ninth season, with Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor.

Eight episodes, each lasting 45 minutes, were ordered by BBC Three for Class. The spin-off carries the same name as Ness' young adult novel which is due to be released next year.
