Britons will finally be able to lay their hands on Google Glass as the wearable device has made its way to UK shores.
With wearable technology being touted as the next big thing, gizmo lovers in the UK will welcome the arrival of the Google Glass in the country even though it's been more than two years since its launch.
However, purchasing Google Glass will cost a pretty penny as the wearable device which claims to "bring people the technology they rely upon without drawing them out of the moment" is priced at £1,000 (approximately $1,700).
To qualify for the purchase of a Google Glass prototype, and become an Explorer in the process, one needs to be over 18 years and a British resident with a valid credit card. Being an Explorer gives users the opportunity to test the Google Glass while it is in its beta phase.
For the uninitiated (who are wondering what all the brouhaha surrounding a pair of glasses is all about), the Google Glass can connect to the Internet when paired with a smartphone. The wearer can read the displayed messages on the tiny thumbnail-sized transparent screen, which is located above the right eye.
What's more, Google Glass has been designed in such a manner that it responds to a head tilt and wakes up automatically. It can also be worn sans prescription lenses. The device's camera can take pictures and record 720p videos in HD.
However, since the device is still in testing and it may be a while before Google Glass is ready to make its way to the shelves.
"It's not ready for mass consumption or a broader audience," Ivy Ross, Head of Google Glass, said. "But we've learned a tremendous amount from the people - from the Explorers, - we sold to in the US on this level and we want to do the same here."
Google Glass has come under fire and been surrounded by controversy in the U.S. with individuals getting fined for driving with the glass on and Explorers getting kicked out of restaurants. The device has also been criticized for its unfashionable design.
It remains to be seen how well the device will be received in the UK. Google Glass for UK has been launched with partner apps like Goal.com, Zombies! Run and Shazam.
If one wants to become an Explorer and purchase the Google Glass, head here. Google will also be hosting a camp in London from June 27 to June 28 where customers can get fitted for the glasses and clear any queries before they purchase the wearable device.
