George R.R. Martin Says 'Game Of Thrones' Movie Rumor Is Completely False

The idea of a Game of Thrones movie isn't a new one. Game of Thrones is HBO's most popular show to date, on a size and scale never before seen on television. Considering other HBO shows like Entourage and Sex in the City have gotten films, it only makes sense for Game of Thrones to get one as well.

There have long been talks of the series concluding in the form of a film for years now, but there has never been an official statement made about that being the plan. Currently showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are planning on the show to come to an end after season eight, so that makes it unclear exactly when a movie may come into play.

The Daily Star says they've spoken with Martin, who had this to say on the subject of a Game of Thrones film.

"There will be a movie but I will not be involved. I have too much to do. That is something HBO and DB and David are dealing with. I have two more books to finish and I still have so much to do."

It's the first time somebody close to the production has stated that the official plan is to include a movie, though Martin doesn't elaborate on what the film would be about or when it may come to theaters.

Except, it appears Martin didn't actually say any of that. You see, Martin himself says over on his personal blog that none of the film rumors reported by The Daily Star are true.

"Yes, completely false," Martin writes. "No one is working on any movie just now."

The Daily Star also says they have some information about what the film may be about. Citing an unnamed insider close to the production, the site says the film may go backwards in the Game of Thrones timeline in order to bring back characters who have long been dead on the show.

It's an interesting idea, and one that would certainly work better than a film that served as the show's endcap. A movie could tell the tale of Robert's Rebellion, the war against the Mad King Aerys Targaryen that serves as the pivotal event that shapes the world of Westeros as TV viewers know it now. Epic battles? Check. Forbidden love? Check. And, of course, all the drama fans have come to expect. The show did recently win an Emmy for best original drama series, after all.

But Martin says that wouldn't be the case either. Continuing off his previous comment, Martin goes on to say "And if there was a movie, it would not be about Robert's Rebellion."

Martin's word, coming from his own personal blog, seems the definitive answer on the subject, but perhaps fans will get a Game of Thrones movie someday. Just don't expect it anytime soon.
