It looks like Samsung's Milk has gone sour: the multinational conglomerate will be shutting down its homegrown video service this upcoming November.
In a statement issued via Google Play — on the actual app page — Samsung was sparse with its explanation of exactly why it decided to discontinue Milk, opting for just the cursory information; the statement itself was duly just as brief:
"Thank you for using Samsung Milk Video. While we remain committed to providing premium entertainment services, we have decided to end support for the Samsung Milk Video app as of November 20, 2015."
Milk was launched a little over a year ago, and it cannot be said that it lacked for want of popularity: the video service, designed for short-form works, made deals with media mogul companies (like Vice and Funny or Die) for content and eventually made it a preloaded app for Samsung smartphones.
While the reason for the shut-down is unclear, it's most likely linked to Samsung's continuous layoffs — in September of this year, it was announced 10,000 jobs would be eliminated, at least temporarily. The cause? Declining smartphone sales, for one, and ultimately diminishing profits.
Despite Milk's untimely upcoming end, its musical counterpart — Milk Music, which came out in March 2015 — is still on Samsung's roster.
