The much-awaited Twitch app for PlayStation is finally launching this coming fall season.
The announcement was made at the TwitchCon Keynote event. Apart from confirming the timeframe, Twitch added that players can expect to get more new features and improvements from the app.
According to Emmett Shear, co-founder of Twitch, the app promises to bring in full chat support, the capacity to follow games and channels and a special section intended for featuring PS4 highlights.
"You can watch, follow, or interact with any broadcaster or game live on Twitch," said the company in a statement.
Using the app's full chat support would mean that users will be able to take advantage of its full chat functionality which include emotes: Robot Emotes, Turbo Emotes and Face Emotes.
Being able to follow games and channels is perfect for anyone who enjoys viewing Twitch streams of all types on the big screen as compared to viewing on a computer monitor.
"Our new PlayStation app gives you the full Twitch experience. You can watch, follow, or interact with any broadcaster or game live on Twitch. With Twitch on PlayStation 4, you can now broadcast your game with the touch of a button," said the company on its official site.
Other features that players can expect from the app include Whispers 2.0, video playlists, a full HTML5 video player, customizable thumbnails for past broadcasts, the ability to upload directly one's own videos into the platform and the ability to customize a playlist by filling it with one's favorite past broadcasts and highlights. The latter will allow the user to "turn your channel into 24/7 viewing experience where your fans can watch and chat about your content whether you're live or offline."
Twitch functionality has already been added to the PS4 by way of built-in streaming which players can access by pressing the "Share" button found in DualShock 4. With the new Twitch app, however, users will no longer have to depend on their consoles for broadcasting. In other words, they don't need all those extra hardware and complicated setups.
Twitch is also giving a revamp to Whisper conversations in October. This will bring in new functionalities such as the user's own docked windows, a list of all his conversations, the ability to start and stop Whisper conversations anytime and the ability to save history forever.
"We wouldn't be able to do this without you, our viewers and broadcasters," said Twitch. "Thank you for helping us take Twitch to the next level."
