Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), more commonly known as drones, are used by some individuals to spy on people. However, the Personal Drone Detection System can warn people from drones trying to invade their privacy.
Although drones have definitely helped governments in significant areas such as law enforcement, military, fire services and more, tech savvy criminals may misuse drones that are fitted with cameras to spy on people. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) currently does not have proper regulations for usage of small drones.
To combat invasion of privacy via a UAV, Domestic Drone Countermeasures (DDC) has launched a Kickstarter project that warns people when drones are trying to spy on them. The company is trying to raise $8,500 so that the Personal Drone Detection System can be delivered by April or May 2015.
"The intent of DDC's Personal Drone Detection System is not to counter military drones. They fly too high and are too sophisticated. Our intent is to keep your privacy safe from your neighbors and people you may not know who are flying small drones near your home or office. The Personal Drone Detection Systems are intended to counter small, personal drones with cameras and other sensors that are not being regulated," per Kickstarter.
The Basic Personal Drone Detection System is made up of three parts: one Primary Command and Control Module and two Detection Sensor Nodes. According to the company's Kickstarter page the all the parts together creates a "mesh grid network that can triangulate moving transmitters."
The system provides a simple user interface using a Wi-Fi on a customer's smartphone, tablet or PC. The company says that "if a signal is not purposely ignored by you, then the system assumes that the rogue transmitter is hostile and alerts you to its presence within the mesh grid."
The Personal Drone Detection System has the ability to send a message on a user's smartphone, which allows a user to get notified even when they are not at home.
The system will have a starting price tag of $499. The Kickstarter project started on June 13 and will and is open till July 16 this year.
The availability of drones is not limited and they are very easily accessible. People can buy them online for less than $500. Moreover, it is relatively easy to learn how to fly a drone. Drones can also be fitted with cameras, which makes them appropriate for spying.
With the increase in drone usage, governments will have to come up with strict regulations to stop potential financial and personal damages. Devices such as the Personal Drone Detection System can help individuals as well as businesses to keep themselves safe from prying eyes.
