A study reveals that New York is the best state and South Dakota the worst when it comes to teen drivers.
Personal finance website WalletHub has published a report that says that motor vehicle crashes is the leading cause of deaths for people who are between 16 years and 19 years. Moreover, comparing all the crashes, teens between 16 years and 19 years have the highest crash rate in the U.S.
Per the findings, New York teens are supposed to be the best drivers with the least number of reported motor accidents. On the other hand, teens of South Dakota are believed to be the worst drivers in the country. WalletHub used 16 key metrics to establish and identify the best and worst teen drivers in 50 states of the U.S.
"We took a close examination of various elements - ranging from the average cost of car repairs and the number of teen drivers in each state to impaired-driving laws and teen driver fatalities. By doing so, we aim to equip parents and other concerned adults with facts that will help them safeguard against unforeseeable events when their teens are on the road. After all, parents are the ones to shoulder both the emotional and financial burdens of their children's actions," per WalletHub.
The report suggests that young people between ages 15 and 24 account for 14 percent of the U.S. population. However, this age group is also responsible for 30 percent of the total financial cost incurred due to motor vehicle injuries. Moreover, the cost does not include auto maintenance, traffic citations, insurance premium contributions and other expenses.
WalletHub highlighted that more teens get a driving license during the summer months. Unfortunately, around 260 teens on an average are believed to be killed during these months. WalletHub says that the purpose of the report is to ensure safety of teen drivers in the country.
According to the published list, Hawaii is in the second position and Illinois enjoys the third position. Oregon and Rhode Island are at the fourth and fifth position.
The bottom most part of the list has states of South Dakota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wyoming.
The WalletHub report also indicates the lowest and the highest population of teen drivers in some states of the country.
