Ever wanted to experience Star Trek's Enterprise in real life? Well, now you can ... sort of, by using the power of virtual reality.
The virtual reality demo is part of a project called the Enterprise 3D Project, which is aimed at potentially recreating the entire ship and allowing users to wander around the entire thing, even taking a shuttlecraft into the surrounding space.
While that's all pretty cool, the Enterprise itself feels a little lifeless, likely because the user is the only one on the ship. Perhaps in the future the creators could add other crewmembers and even missions for users to complete.
The first thing for a user to notice is likely the fact that the rendering isn't all that photorealistic, although the creator has put in a lot of attention to detail, whether it looks like an animation or not. The entire project is the work of a 3D artist called Jason B, who used the Unreal Engine 4 suite of game development tools for it.
According to Jason, current plans are only to recreate part of the Enterprise, although if fans show an interest in the project, he might use a platform like Kickstarter to raise funds to make recreating more of the ship happen. Of course, if that does happen he will probably need CBS' approval, because it holds the rights to Star Trek.
