iFixit, the website known for tearing apart devices in order to find out just how repairable they are, has turned to the new Apple TV, finding that it could be one of the most repairable devices in Apple history.
This is pretty significant given the fact that Apple is known for making things almost impossible to repair.
"Only a few plastic clips stand in the way here, with no adhesive or screws in sight," notes iFixit in its review. Once the team at iFixit was able to open up the device, it noted that the modular design of the set-top box made for a relatively easy device to open up and put back together. The power supply in the box is separate from everything else and is easily replaceable. Even the power jack is modular.
The remote that accompanies the box is held together with adhesive, however, it seems as though it is relatively easy to pry open. The battery and Lightning cable are soldered together in the remote, but they are the only things soldered together, so the remote should also be pretty easy to repair.
Overall, the new Apple TV was given a repairability score of 8 out of 10, which is almost unheard of for an Apple product.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether this is represents a change in Apple's design philosophy or if it is simply a diamond in the rough. We're guessing it's the latter. However, we should find out soon enough when iFixit takes to the new iPhone 6S.
