Applying Makeup While Commuting Could Lead To Serious Eye Damage

To save time, many women multitask by putting on their makeup during commute. While many people cringe on this makeup habit, eye experts said sudden movements inside a moving vehicle can seriously damage the eyes, particularly the cornea.

The announcement was made during the National Eye Health Week in the U.K. Dr. Susan Blakeney from the College of Optometrists said that a hygienic makeup practice plays a role in good eye health.

"The human eye is pretty resilient, but poor hygiene can lead to unpleasant infections", said Blakeney. A good makeup hygiene includes washing your hands, taking note of the products' best-before dates and proper handling of makeup tools. Sadly, a new survey showed how careless many women are when it comes to makeup application and general health.

A survey circulated by College of Optometrists revealed that half of makeup users in the U.K. do not check the expiration date labels on their mascara and other eye products. The eye health warning is in direct response to the general concern that many makeup users fail to use common sense when it comes to makeup application such as checking the expiry date, putting on contact lenses first before applying makeup and using pointed tools near their eyes while inside a moving vehicle.

The research team also revealed that over 50 percent of the makeup users who participated in the survey share their mascara with other people. Half of the survey participants are 16 to 24 years old. Proper makeup hygiene discourages sharing of personal products even with family and friends.

Eye experts also stressed the importance of putting on contacts lenses prior to applying any makeup. Makeup particles can get trapped inside lenses and infect the eyes.

This new makeup-on-the-go habit is either inappropriate or amusing to people. A modern woman's ability to apply makeup while on the go has its share of haters. Women make use of the open time when commuting to put makeup instead of spending precious minutes at home. The need to dash out of the house to avoid the morning gridlock is the main reason that cause this modern day phenomenon.
