If you weren't able to watch the 2015 Emmys this past Sunday via cable or livestream, you might have followed it in real time on one of the quickest newsfeeds around, Twitter. And according to the popular social media site/app, Lady Gaga, Viola Davis, Game of Thrones, and the hashtag campaign #SmartGirlsAsk were among the most popular topics to trend during the television award ceremony.
Here is a quick breakdown of the most popular shows, moments, and people everyone was tweeting about.
Trending Shows
1) Game of Thrones (@GameOfThrones)
2) Veep (@VeepHBO)
3) Orange is the New Black (@OITNB)
4) American Horror Story (@AHSFX)
5) Mad Men (@MadMen_AMC)
The two most talked-about shows -- HBO's epic fantasy drama Game of Thrones and the presidential comedy show Veep -- were also the night's big winners, each scoring an Emmy in their respective categories. In addition to this, Tony Hale's win for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series help shoot the program to the second slot on the list.

While Netflix's Orange is the New Black failed to nab a trophy for Outstanding Drama, actress Uzo Aduba garnered an Emmy for her portrayal of Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" in the Oustanding Supporting Actress category. The same went for Jon Hamm for his last stint as Don Drapper in the swan song season for AMC's Mad Men. And while the fright-filled American Horror Story grabbed 19 nominations for Freak Show, it's most recent installment in the anthology series, it only won for five categories, all of them technical, and lost to HBO's New England miniseries Olive Kitteridge for Oustanding Limited Series.

2) Viola Davis
3) Jon Hamm
4) Amy Poehler
5) Tatiana Maslany
How to Get Away With Murder's Viola Davis took home an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama, becoming the first black woman to do so in the history of the award show. Her poignant speech on inequity in POC and WOC representation (perhaps best summarized by the lines "You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there" and "The only thing that separates women of color from anyone is opportunity") drew accolades from all corners of the internet.
What an amazing @TheEmmys ! TY 2 .@violadavis for your beautiful work and for just CRUSHING the ceiling. #history — Jennifer Beals (@jenniferbeals) September 21, 2015

Just watched @violadavis' incredibly moving and powerful speech. I hope I can be a white woman that helps erase that line. — Rhea Butcher (@RheaButcher) September 21, 2015
And to top it all off, this GIF-able moment with fellow nominee Taraji P. Henson:
That vine of Viola and Taraji hugging is a masterclass in how to be ambitious, excellent AND supportive. https://t.co/TdzhkNZy68 — Saeed Jones (@theferocity) September 21, 2015
Despite Davis' win, fans of Orphan Black were disappointed by Tatiana Maslany's loss in the category; the Canadian actress had been snubbed for years by the Television Academy for her work as multiple characters (all of them clones of one another) on the sci fi show. Suffice it to say, a large chunk of the Twitterverse was not happy with the outcome.
#CloneClub we may have lost the battle but we have not lost the war. @tatianamaslany will get her well deserved award one day. #OrphanBlack — The Other Nic (@CloneNic) September 21, 2015
Apparently next season Maslany has to play at least eleven characters. #CloneClub — keithlaw (@keithlaw) September 21, 2015
The celebrity who trended the most, however, was none other than Lady Gaga, whose award night outfit and afterparty dress more or less stole the show.
Did you see @ladygaga's #Emmys after-party dress? IDK if sitting was possible but it werkss. https://t.co/VjhMiidA5u pic.twitter.com/LeO7UjSIiF — MTV Style (@MTVstyle) September 21, 2015
Trending Hashtag
As for the most popular hashtag of the night, we have Amy Poehler to thank for this one: the comedian and former start of Parks and Recreation created the social media campaign and "encouraged viewers to Tweet a compelling question to any Emmy nominee for a chance to see their question answered live on the day of the show via a Twitter Mirror app on the red carpet," according to Twitter's press statement.
