After Marvel's Secret Wars storyline, Spider-Man 2099 hung up his web-slinging costume and embraced life as a regular guy, with a regular job and a stable relationship.
However, retirement isn't for everyone, not even Miguel O'Hara, and in Spider-Man 2099 #1, Miguel must face a new threat that has him suiting up again, although this time with a brand new costume.
"Eight months have passed since the end of Secret Wars," writes Marvel in a press release. "With a steady job at Parker Industries, a stable relationship, and a life in the present day — Spider-Man 2099 is no more! That's right, Miguel O'Hara has hung up the webs. But when a dangerous new threat appears and puts his new life in jeopardy, he's got no choice but to suit up once more."
Written by Peter David with art by Will Sliney, Spider-Man 2099 promises "a wallcrawler unlike anything you've seen before."
Here's a first look at issue #1's cover art and inside pages.
Miguel became Spider-Man himself in the year 2099 when, as a geneticist, he researched how to recreate the original abilities held by Spider-Man. He eventually suffered an accident similar to Peter Parker's that gave him his web-slinging and webcrawling abilities.
In Spider-Man 2099, Miguel is still stuck in the present Marvel universe, but now has a steady relationship and a job at Peter Parker's company. He's trying to retire from being a superhero, but of course, as with all superheroes, retirement never goes well.
Cover art for Spider-Man 2099 #1 comes courtesy Francesco Mattina, with design variant covers by Kris Anka and Rick Leonardi. The title also gets a hip-hop variant by Afu Chan.
Recently, Spider-Man 2099 artist Will Sliney took a break from drawing Spider-Man 2099 to draw a marriage proposal for his girlfriend: obviously, she said yes.
Spider-Man 2099 #1 swings into reality on October 14.
