Last month, Nintendo released its side scroller platform and game creation title Super Mario Maker. Now, the company celebrates 1 million course uploads to its community by Super Mario Maker users.
Super Mario Maker lets users create and play their own courses on the Wii U gamepad, based on the Super Mario Bros. games. As users progress through the game, they get more tools to make more elaborate courses. Players can also share their courses and play courses created by other users.
Super Mario Maker wasn't always intended for public consumption. Originally, Nintendo only wanted to create something for its internal development team. However, the company soon realized that Wii U gamers would love a tool that allowed them to create their own Mario courses, so it decided to make Super Mario Maker available to the public.
"We think this is a game that will showcase people's sense of imagination," said Takashi Tezuka, the executive officer of Nintendo's entertainment analysis and development division to Polygon. "Seeing the courses made by [those folks] made us realize it had much more potential than even we imagined."
Nintendo was right — and now it's celebrating over 1 million courses uploaded from Super Mario Maker. To honor the occasion, the company released the following video on its Japanese Twitter account.
So far, Super Mario Maker has received a positive response from Mario fans, as well as from critics. IGN called the game "incredibly fun," praising Nintendo for how robust the creation engine is, as well as how flexible it is in creating courses.
This new celebration comes after a rather big occasion for the Super Mario Bros. games: the franchise recently marked its 30th anniversary.
