Timex has begun teasing its next smartwatch, to be called the Metropolitan+, which is aimed at competing with the new wave of fashion-conscious watches recently announced by tech companies.
The device was teased with a singular photo, along with the announcement that Timex would be following in the footsteps of companies like Withings.
Of course, this won't be the first time that Timex has dabbled with things like fitness tracking. Back in February, the company released the Ironman One GPS+ watch, a digital watch aimed at the fitness-conscious among us. The device runs on AT&T's data plan and has 4 GB of on-board storage with a built-in music player. It's able to track speed, distance and pace all in real-time.
It's unlikely that all of the fitness tracking features in the One GPS+ watch will make it over to the new Metropolitan+, with the new device having been built for style rather than efficiency. It looks similar to other classic chronograph analog watches by Timex and has two crowns on the side and two dials on the face.
It's likely that the dials are not typical ones that would be found on other non-smart watches. Smartwatches from the likes of Withings use dials to show activity progress, putting quickly-accessible information straight from the face of the watch while keeping the design quite clear.
Little information about the new device has been released, so we'll just have to wait and see what kind of specifications it has to offer. It does seem as though the Metropolitan+ is a nice attempt by the company at offering a watch with more than just the standard features.
Timex hasn't yet given an official release date or price for its new device, however, the company labeled it as a 2015 product in a presentation at the Qualcomm 3G/LTE summit, so its likely we will see it before the end of the year.
