The on again, off again live action Akira movie project has been on Hollywood's backburner for years. But rumor now has it that the movie is back up in talks and none other than Christopher Nolan of the Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar, and Inception fame is one of the names being dropped as being attached to the project.
However, those who think that Nolan's mystery July 2017 film with Warner Bros. might be the Akira movie we've all been waiting for, might have to look elsewhere for clues on that mystery project. Although it has been said that Nolan is attached to the Akira movie (or set of three movies), it will not be in the director's seat – at least not at this point.
According to reports from Den of Geeks, Appian Way, the company owned by Leonardo DiCaprio, which is producing the rumored Akira Trilogy, enlisted to the help of Nolan to re-enlist the involvement of another director who was previously interested in the films to take on the director's helm. No word of who that director might be of if that meeting was successful.
Andrew Lazar and Mad Chance are also producing the movies and it was reported back in June that Marco J. Ramirez, the showrunner for Daredevil Season 2, was writing the script.
Again, it is still unclear if Akira will be released as a trilogy and if Christopher Nolan will be involved in it in any way at all. However, the dystopian technological themes of the Japanese manga seem to be right up Nolan's alley and with no official word yet on what his 2017 Warner movie is, many are hopeful that the director will pull a surprise on everyone and announce that he is indeed the director for Akira.
