With all the news surrounding Beats Electronics being acquired by Apple, folks might have forgotten that Beats still make headphones, and the company reminded everyone of that truth recently with the announcement of an all new line of in-ear devices called the Powerbeats 2 Wireless.
The Powerbeats 2 is designed for athletes, and it is refreshing to see Beats create a new product line going forward. Furthermore, this device is the first in-ear headphone Beats has released since the company split from Monster and chose to work on its headphone designs alone.
When consumers look at the Powerbeats 2, it might look simple and cheap, but this is far from the case. The device works via Bluetooth, though we are not certain if users can plug-in a USB wire and use it like any other normal headphone. In addition, the cost of the headphone is a whopping $200; not surprising since it carries the Beats branding.
Like every headphones that came out of the Beats labs, consumers should expect a heavy emphasis on bass, as this is where Beats Electronics made a name for itself.
We understand that on a full charge, the Powerbeats 2 is able to deliver up to six hours of music playback, something audiophiles would definitely enjoy. We also understand that the design is inspired by LeBron James with its IPX4 sweat and water resistance.
"To me this product represents the intersection of sports and music," said Beats president Luke Wood. "This is Beats, superior technology and design with premium sound quality. But most importantly, the Powerbeats2 Wireless are designed to serve as a tool for athletes at all fitness levels, whether you're LeBron James in training or just out for a morning run."
Apparently, LeBron James helped with the creation of the Powerbeats 2, but we won't put the blame solely on him for the lackluster and ugly design.
"As one of the co-creators of Powerbeats, I am so proud of how the product continues to evolve and transform the athlete experience with music. There's nothing else out there that delivers this brand of high quality sound during an intense workout, and these new Powerbeats2 Wireless take it to a whole new level," said NBA all-star LeBron James.
With LeBron James behind this device, we expect it to shoot up in sales, but we won't be one of the many consumers going out to pick up one of these.
