Doctor Who Season 9 is almost here, and in anticipation, the BBC has just released the first mini-episode leading up to the season premiere.
According to the BBC, this mini-sode begins Season 9 of the long-running science fiction program, mentioning a mysterious as-of-yet unnamed villain — a person the Doctor dreads seeing, but, according to this clip, must.
In the prologue, the Doctor returns to Karn and has a conversation with one of the sisters there.
The last time we saw the Doctor here was when he was in his eighth incarnation, just before he became the War Doctor.
So is this a sign that the 12th Doctor is about to regenerate? Peter Capaldi is in his second year as the Doctor, so most would argue that it's too soon for him to be replaced, but the BBC does like to tease nonetheless. The conversation in this clip, too, seems rather ominous — and when the Doctor leaves the sister, it seems as if he's saying goodbye for good.
So who is this mystery villain the Doctor will see? And what's up with the strange disk-object that he handed to the sister? And why does the end of the scene seem so final?
Whatever the case, this prologue sets up a great tease for the upcoming season, making next week the longest of Who fans' lives. Fans can, however, whet their appetites by re-watching the last two episodes of the last season, "Dark Water" and "Death in Heaven," in theaters in 3D, including a special never-before-seen prequel to Season 9. Even better? The event's host is none other than nerd icon Wil Wheaton.
Season 9 of Doctor Who premieres September 19 on BBC and BBC America.
