Nvidia Rolls Out Update 3.1.1 For Shield Tablet To Include Stagefright Patch

In a bid to safeguard its customers, particularly its Shield tablet users, Nvidia is now rolling out an update for its flagship tablet.

Nvidia said it is now releasing version 3.1.1, which includes the patch for the Stagefright bug exploit, which would give hackers access to a victim's entire media library. Stagefright, a media engine, is a core component of the Android OS.

A lot of people across the globe are worried about the Stagefright exploit which affects almost all Android devices. As a result, many manufacturers have just released updates which contain the patch for the exploit.

Interestingly, the update also comes with a few general optimizations as well as performance enhancements.

Apart from the Stagefright patch, other updates include the following: systemwide optimizations and fixes, which include Netflix playback as well as battery performance; stability and performance improvements; as well as a firmware update for the Shield wireless controller.

Once the update is installed, according to reports, users should expect their Shield Tablet to be a bit faster.

In August, we reported that AT&T rolled out patches to Galaxy devices, including Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Active, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S5 Active as well as Galaxy Note 4. The update released by AT&T only included improvements to the security of the devices, ensuring that these devices are protected from the Stagefright exploit.

Meanwhile, an application was developed to allow users to know if their mobile devices have received security patches against the Stagefright exploit. The app, which is called Stagefright Detector, was created by Zimperium zLabs, the same security firm that first advised the general public of the vulnerability. Joshua Drake, the vice president of platform research and exploitation at Zimperium zLabs, discovered Stagefright. He then provided patches to Google.

Ultimate Tablet For Gamers

The Shield Tablet is currently dubbed as a tablet for gamers.

"The Shield tablet is based on the Nvidia Tegra K1 mobile processor, which brings the world's most advanced Nvidia Kepler GPU to mobile," says Nvidia.

The tablet is also equipped with the following features which, according to the company, are specially designed for gamers: Shield controller compatibility; Nvidia Gamestream; Grid game streaming service; Nvidia Share; Gamepad Mapper; Console Mode; and Nvidia Shield Hub.
