AMC's latest zombie drama Fear the Walking Dead took a brief hiatus for the Labor Day holiday weekend, but the third episode of the first season is bringing the Walking Dead spin-off back with a vengeance — and possibly the very downfall of society itself.
Amid the blast of Molotov cocktails, a citizen-induced riot, army tanks, undead denizens, and a S.W.A.T. team member literally getting his face chomped off under his Plexiglass face shield, the impetus of what causes mass chaos – or what germinates the fall of order – is posited as a thematic question. According to patriarch Daniel Salazar's voiceover, the answer is this: "Men do [bad] things not because of evil — they do evil because of fear."
Set only a few months before the events of its companion show, Fear the Walking Dead follows a blended family who calls the city of Los Angeles home.
Here is AMC's official full synopsis of the show:
Living in the same universe as The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead is a gritty drama that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark and English teacher Travis Manawa have managed to assemble.
The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.
AMC's Fear the Walking Dead airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.
