XYZ Printing has unveiled a handheld 3D scanner that gives users the tools to be able to print full-color 3D objects.
The design of the device allows it to be used to scan objects of virtually any shape, which produces color images of the shape. The maximum scan size is currently 23.6 x 23.6 x 11.8 inches, although the company may increase the dimensions before the device's official release.
Intel's RealSense technology powers the device. XYZ Printing says that this technology is perfect for its scanner, and allows for fast scanning and processing. After an object has been scanned, a 3D model of it can be viewed and edited through software before finally being sent to a 3D printer.
The main selling point of the new scanner is just how easy it is to use. It's only around half of a pound in weight, and users can simply hold it in their hand to scan an object. This is far easier to use than 3D scanners of a higher resolution. It combines infrared, CCD and color-sensing technology in order to capture images at 30 frames per second and a 1 mm resolution.
The device itself uses USB to connect to a computer and works on Windows 8.1 and higher. When the device is finally released in November, it will cost around $222.
It is, of course, likely that we will see more devices that make 3D printing easy as time goes on and as 3D printing becomes more and more popular.
