Microsoft's June Black Tuesday patch is now out but Windows 8.1 users can only download it if they are running Windows 8.1 Update 1 released in spring.

In April this year, Microsoft initially imposed a deadline to consumers to install Windows 8.1 Update 1 by May 13. However, just a day before the deadline, the company announced that it is giving more time to customers and extended the deadline to install Windows 8.1 Update 1 by June 10. Business users have a deadline date of August 12 to install the update.

The deadline of June 10 has now passed. Customers who had installed Windows 8.1 Update 1 will get the latest patch automatically via Windows Update. However, users who are running Windows 8.1 and did not install Windows 8.1 Update 1 will not be able to install the patch on their system.

Users who are on Windows 8, not Windows 8.1, are not subject to the requirement to move to Windows 8.1 Update by June 10. (Microsoft has set January 2016 as the end support date for Windows 8 users who haven't moved to 8.1.) Those running Windows 8 who are interested in moving to Windows 8.1 Update do not need to move to Windows 8.1 first, as these updates are cumulative.

Reports suggest that customers who are trying to install Windows 8.1 Update 1 and are unable to install the update may have to re-install Windows 8. Customers who are still using Windows Vista, Windows 8 or Windows 7 will continue to receive updates normally.

"Customers who rely on Windows Updates (as opposed to Windows Server Update Service commonly used in corporate environments), and who have chosen to manually select and/or download updates instead of accepting Windows' default update settings to automatically install, and who have then deselected the Windows 8.1 update for download or installation, will not see subsequent updates because they only apply once the Windows 8.1 Update is installed. Manually downloading these subsequent updates will result in failed installation for the same reason," Microsoft spokeswoman Jill Lovato wrote in a statement.

The Windows 8.1 Update 1 brings in a number of new features and enhancements that are specifically designed for users who navigate and operate their computer using a mouse and a keyboard.
