Smartphone cameras are quite good — and only getting better. That doesn't mean, of course, that there isn't room for improvement.
DxO is going where a number of other companies have certainly attempted with its first piece of hardware — the fittingly titled One — which snaps onto an Phone and instantly ups its photography game.
The device is a box with a small display and camera button that fits into the phone's charging port. It took me a bit to get comfortable with it and figure out where to hold my hands so I: A. Didn't drop the thing and; B. Didn't have a finger directly in front of the lens.
The camera takes excellent shots — and the company's app offers all manner of camera options, like ISO, white balance and shutter speed. There is, however, no built-in zoom, which feels like a pretty big oversight.
The device also doesn't fully secure to the phone, leaving the whole thing a bit wobbly in your hands (hence the aforementioned nervousness about dropping the poor PR guy's iPhone).
Then, there's the price: $600. That's likely a deal breaker for most, seeing as how you can get a pretty decent mirrorless camera for close to the same amount.
