Samsung announced the Gear S2 at IFA in Berlin, and during the press conference, the company also teased its upcoming Galaxy View tablet.
Rumors have been circling the industry that Samsung is working on an 18.4-inch tablet, which is now speculated to be the Galaxy View. Currently, the Korean firm offers a number of tablets ranging from smaller 8-inch devices for home use to 12.2-inch slates for professionals.
A big 18.4-inch tablet can offer a new media and entertainment experience for users. Samsung did not reveal any specs about the upcoming Galaxy View but previous reports suggest that the tablet will have 1,920 x 1,080 display.
An Exynos 7580 processor and 2GB of RAM are estimated to power the device. The tablet will have 32GB of on-board storage with the option to expand the memory with a microSD card. The Galaxy View is also rumored to get an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 2.1MP front-facing camera for video chatting.
A big tablet needs a big battery and a 5,700mAh battery may power the Galaxy View. The upcoming tablet may measure 451.8mm x 275.8mm x 11.9mm. The Galaxy View is expected to come running on Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box. However, the tablet may get Android 6.0 Marshmallow soon after it is released.
In early August, French website Nowhereelse.fr reported that an 18.4-inch Samsung tablet appeared on Zauba, an Indian import tracker. The database showed that Samsung had imported five units of its 18.4-inch tablet to India for testing purposes.
Each of the 18.4-inch tablets had a value of INR 32,371, or about $508. However, the retail price tag of the tablets will be different.
Competition in the bigger tablet market may increase in the coming years. Apple is rumored to launch a new tablet called iPad Pro that will have a screen size of 12.9 inches. Microsoft is also said to launch the next-generation Surface Pro 4 soon in two sizes: 12-inch and 14-inch. However, with a screen size of 18.4-inch, the Galaxy View will be the largest of the lot.
Big tablet enthusiasts will hope to lay their hands on the Galaxy View as soon as possible. However, they will have to wait before Samsung officially takes the wraps off the tablet.
