The WWE is doing whatever it can to distance itself from Jimmy 'Superfly' Snuka.
World Wrestling Entertainment removed the former superstar, who grappled with the company during the early 1980s and 1990s, from its Hall of Fame section and wiped his profle from its website Wednesday (September 2), one day after he was charged with the 1983 third-degree murder of his girlfriend Nancy Argentino. The WWE also suspended Snuka's Legends contract.
"Jimmy Snuka's non-wrestling 'legends' contract has been suspended and we are currently removing his images from our media platforms pending the outcome of this case," the WWE wrote in a statement to media outlets.
This has been a dark period for the sports entertainment giant, considering the deaths of Hall of Famers Dusty Rhodes and Rowdy Roddy Piper just a month apart earlier this summer and the WWE having to wipe Hulk Hogan from its Hall of Fame as well following reports of his racial tirade, in which he used the n-word.
However, the shocking news about Snuka comes after Lehigh County district attorney Jim Martin was able to re-open the case last year over an investigation by the Morning Call, which sparked questions over the death of Snuka's 23-year-old girlfriend, Argentino, back in May 1983. The Morning Call's story revealed an autopsy report, which named the case a homicide.
The autopsy report also documented that Argentino died of blunt brain injuries and had several cuts and bruises on her body. The latter are consistent with domestic violence and perhaps a struggle.
Just last month, Snuka, 72, was revealed to be battling stomach cancer.
