Actor Liev Schreiber, also known as Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, recently hinted on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that the next and final Wolverine film will cover the "Old Man Logan" storyline from Marvel comics.
The interview with Schreiber started easily enough — at least until Fallon mentioned a photo posted by Hugh Jackman, the real-life Wolverine, on Twitter. In the photo, Fallon points out that Jackman's "arms are bigger than his head."
The two laughed at the remark and then Fallon pointed out Schreiber's response to that tweet, which was "do I have to do that..."
So does this mean that Sabretooth will appear in the new Wolverine film? Although both Schreiber and Jackman have hinted at it on Twitter, Schreiber mentions here that he hasn't been invited to take on the role — at least not yet, but that's he's obviously interested.
"I heard that the storyline is 'Old Man Logan,'" said Schreiber to Fallon. "And when I heard that, I thought, 'Well, you know there's Old Man Logan, there could be Old Man Sabretooth.'"
Although it has not yet been confirmed, some speculate that the still-unnamed Wolverine film will feature the "Old Man Logan" storyline from Marvel comics by writer Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven. This was an eight-issue storyline that began in 2008 and ran into the following year.
The "Old Man Logan" storyline features an alternate universe with a setting 50 years into the future. In that universe, the U.S. is under the control of supervillains, with superheroes being wiped from existence, save for those in hiding, including Logan – aka Wolverine – who lives in a desolate part of the country with his wife and children.
In the story, there is no more Wolverine, as that persona of Logan's died the day the rest of the superheroes did. Logan refuses to use his powers in the story, preferring life as a mortal man. Of course, Logan finds himself forced to embrace his claws to seek vengeance once again.
The next Wolverine film's production company has not yet confirmed that this will be the plot, but it would certainly match the futuristic tone set by the most recent X-Men movie, Days of Future Past.
